SAFER (Company Snapshot)

SAFER (Safety and Fitness Electronic Records) is FMCSA's public lookup site, and its Company Snapshot is the page most people mean by "checking SAFER": one carrier's registration, operating status, fleet size, inspection and crash summaries, and safety rating, fetched by USDOT or MC number.

What it shows and what it can't

SAFER is authoritative as far as it goes; it is the agency's own snapshot. What it doesn't show is most of what vetting actually turns on: authority and insurance history (grants, revocations, gaps, cancellation notices), per-inspection detail, where the carrier actually operates, cross-carrier identity overlaps, or any benchmarking that tells you whether a number is normal for a fleet that size. Those live in separate published datasets that the Snapshot doesn't surface, and assembling them by hand across portals is slow enough that under booking pressure it usually doesn't happen.

Where fleetfax fits

fleetfax reads the same public federal record, ingested daily, and assembles those layers into one report with named flags and the evidence behind each. It adds no private data and is not affiliated with FMCSA; the difference is depth, normalization, and speed, not access. Anything fleetfax shows can be verified against the federal sources, which is exactly how a vetting tool should be checkable.

USDOT number

The federal registration number every interstate carrier must hold. The primary key of the federal carrier record.

Safety rating

FMCSA's official Satisfactory / Conditional / Unsatisfactory grade from a compliance review. Roughly 94% of carriers have never received one.

Out-of-service (OOS) rate

The percentage of a carrier's roadside inspections that ended with the vehicle or driver ordered off the road. Compared against published national averages, it's a core inspection-failure metric.

fleetfax reads public FMCSA data and is not affiliated with FMCSA or the U.S. Department of Transportation. This page explains terminology; it is not legal advice.
